PURE AND SIMPLE BEAUTY

That’s how I would describe my memories of Africa from my safari with 2AFRIKA! I went into this trip with no clue of what to expect. I was excited yet somewhat apprehensive of the vast country I was about to encounter. Yet from the first email with my 2AFRIKA rep to the clerk at the smallest vineyard in Stellenbosch, I received only the best, from knowledge and experience to recommendations and places to avoid. What a FABULOUS trip this was!

Johannesburg and the tour of Soweto put names and places with knowledge from history and social studies. It was awe inspiring to see the people and learn about their lives. It was pure and simple, there was nothing fancy about any of it.

Kruger National Park is the epitome of pure and simple beauty! Nothing could be more simple than seeing rhinos and lions roaming together in their natural habitat. The experience of the Manyatta Rock Camp was amazing. I can’t think of another place where your room is a rock and your shower is attached to the outside of the rock so you can stare at the stars while you feel the warmth of the water under a night sky.

Sunset on the Zambezi River in Zambia was pure and simple beauty! From the chair on the boat I watched as the sun set in the distance. Everyone on the boat was quiet, in awe of the natural beauty of this phenomena we experience everyday yet seldom take advantage of! It’s funny how being in a different environment makes you appreciate the natural beauty of the earth even more!

Africa was an unforgettable experience! The people and the land are pure and simple beauty!

Kenya and Tanzania are amazing!

The varied ecosystems, abundance of animals, fresh air, delicious food, warm sunny days, and cultural differences all contributed to a wonderful vacation. Having skilled drivers to see to everything meant my only concerns were to change batteries, film, and memory cards in my cameras and enjoy the experience.

The seven parks and reserves I visited were all different and remarkable in their own way. My favorite was Kenya’s Amboseli National Park because it was always changing. It was very dry upon my arrival and seemed like a ghost town. Everything was covered in volcanic ash from Mt. Kilimanjaro with dust funnels whirling into the sky. But after it rained the park was green and fresh, and it looked like a completely different place. The sky was incredible and constantly changing. It could be clear and blue and just down the road, it would be multicolored and ominous.

Beside the variety of wild life, seeing the “Big Five” and witnessing the migration, there are many things I will never forget about East Africa. One is being awaken in the morning by a staff member calling out “Jambo!” when bringing a breakfast tray to the tent before the sunrise game drive. The melodious sound of the Maasai welcome chant, when I visited a village to learn of their culture, was hauntingly beautiful. Witnessing a brawl between two troops of baboons in the Serengeti was an unexpected treat. A hot air balloon ride over the Maasai Mara Game Reserve fulfilled a long time dream of mine. I enjoyed hand feeding cabbage to tortoises and seeing baby peacocks on Prison Island. And wish I could experience the succulent sweet juiciness of fresh picked fruit and the exotic aromas of spices in Zanzibar again. Seeing the majestic peak of Mt. Kilimanjaro, in all its snow covered glory, from above the clouds was breathtaking. And now every time it rains while the sun is shining here, at home, I smile knowing it’s because the hyenas are having a wedding.

The most striking thing about my trip though was the people. I will never forget the way the Kenyans’ eyes sparkle when they smile. In fact, their entire faces light up the moment they smile which causes a chain reaction and before you know it everyone is smiling.

Thank you Kenneth, 2AFRIKA really did make my safari dreams come true!

IN THEIR OWN WORDS - Back from Botswana and the Victoria Falls

Our Journey to South Africa with 2AFRIKA

While looking through Budget Travel, I came across a grand trip for a grand price to Africa. We had always wanted to go, and decided this was the time to make our dreams come true. We booked the trip for late August and immediately began planning!

The day we boarded the plane, I think we were in disbelief. Twenty three hours later we arrived in Zimbabwe, tired but excited, watching the landscape go by, en route to our gorgeous lodge. Our first full day in Zimbabwe was a tour of Victoria Falls. The power of the water, creating its own rainbow, while surrounded by lush foliage was a sight many will never have the chance to experience. Later that day, we took an elephant safari. Cocoa and Stephen made a great team; hostess and guide! The next day we were guided through the 18-hole golf course by one of the helpful staff, and to our amazement walked through herds of Kudu and Water Buck, Warthogs, and Baboons, some of which hung from a volleyball net! It was an incredible sight and a great story for the golf enthusiasts back home!

As our trip progressed to Botswana, our first sighting of Giraffe on the side of the road was worth wide eyed looks, and kept us speechless, except for an occasional “look!” While staying at the magnificent lodge there, one of the most memorable aspects was a boat ride on the Chobe River. As we slid down the river, we passed lounging hippos, and crocodiles, various species of birds, and even monitor lizards. The masses of elephants drinking, crossing, and playing in the water, was more than photographs could capture, and as if to put an exclamation point on the day, the breathtaking sunset settled over the countryside, as we became part of the postcard.

Lastly we visited a Namibian village, learning the culture, and struggles of past and present from someone who lives there. The natives were remarkable, and it was a great way to end our days in Africa.

This life changing first trip to Africa included four countries, one of the Seven Wonders of the World, animals from elephants to spiders, and inhabitants of villages to huge cities, such as Johannesburg. It educated us, and brought awareness of a diverse existence. Thank you for the opportunity!

IN THEIR OWN WORDS - Back from Cape Town, Victoria Falls & Botswana

Kenneth Hieber arranged a trip for us to Africa. We intended to go on a photo safari only, however, Kenneth convinced us to take a side trip to Cape Town since we were traveling such a distance. Best decision we ever made!

Every aspect of our trip went like clockwork. South African Airways is a great airline - very service oriented and comfortable. All flights were on time and no luggage was lost! The on-site representative appeared on time every time.

While in Cape Town, we toured Cape Point, Hermanus Bay, Arabella Golf Club, a winery and, of course, Table Mountain. The city was beautiful, the views from Table Mountain were incredible and our hotel was very nice.

We arrived in Botswana via Livingstone and crossed the Zambezi River by boat and were transferred to Chobe Safari Lodge where we were greeted with a warm welcome and frosty mango drinks. Our room was very nice with a river view. The activity center was eager to help us arrange all safari drives, cruises, transfers, etc. Breakfast and dinner buffets were beautifully displayed and the food was wonderful. We tasted springbok, eland, kudu, etc.

What an experience!!

The safari drives were the BEST. On our first early morning drive, we came upon a pride of lions walking in the middle of the road. On our first river cruise, we saw many hippos, crocs, impala, and of course, elephants. All the drivers were very knowledgeable about the park and its inhabitants. We saw lions, impala, several species of birds, cape buffalo, kudu, puku, water buffalo, hippos, crocs, giraffes, dung beetles, monkeys, baboons, wart hogs and more elephants that we could ever count.

We took a day trip to Victoria Falls and made the 2-hour walk around the park. We took many beautiful pictures of this magnificent wonder. Impossible to describe the beauty. We also took a Village walk into Namibia. We were in five countries while there - South Africa, Botswana, Namibia, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

This was a trip of a lifetime for us and we have nothing but wonderful things to say about you and the arrangements you made for us. Africa is truly a beautiful place to visit and we bring home only wonderful memories. We have highly recommended you to friends and family and look forward to you arranging another trip to Africa for us.

IN THEIR OWN WORDS - Back from Botswana

My first trip to the African continent was so primal. Going on safari drives was like being a child in the month of December anticipating my Christmas presents.

Each drive was full of surprises and pure delights. My first safari drive was unbelievable! The first thirty minutes of the drive provided elephants lumbering across the river, sable resting on the savannah, impala’s playing everywhere, a handsome young lion looking full of pride, and then the piece de resistance - a breath taking leopard resting in the notch of a bare tree. It was like she was poising for her spread in Vogue! Not to mention the unexpected safari drive gifts were the range and beauty of the birds one sees.

Each game drive was wonderful – I was just as excited to go on the next game drive as if it were my first. The game drivers finally looked at me and said “You are going again?” My response was “You are training me to be a game driver.”

To be a visitor in the home of these wonderful creatures is so humbling. Living the safari experience is an unimaginably awesome. Seeing African sunsets just lets you know that everyday ends wonderfully.

Africa said goodbye to me with a parade of her finest animals on my last safari. Africa presented me the present of her big five – lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhino not once but four times in multiples. Africa gave her best that early morning with dew on the ground and the sunrays just starting to show. Africa showed a rhino that was colossal in size. Africa gave me young lions just getting their mane fuzz along with young lionesses, mama and papa lion with baby lion twice over. Then Africa upped the ante by throwing in three beautiful leopards walking on the ground which even was a real “oh my god” treat for our driver – he had never seen three together at the same time.

Africa gave me a wonderful welcome on my first safari drive and made sure she gave me a siren’s call to return with the presents she presented on my last game drive.

Go and see these fabulous creatures and help protect them so others can get goose bumps seeing these creatures.

IN THEIR OWN WORDS - Back from South Africa and Botswana

I just wanted to drop you a quick note. My wife and I have now returned from our "Season of Plenty" trip to Botswana/ Namibia/Zimbabwe and one night in South Africa. We had a great time and met many interesting and wonderful people, and loved the Chobe Safari Lodge as well as the S.A. Safari Club in Johannesburg.

Everything worked out very well and the only problem was that we had to return from our trip!

The only change we made to the planned itinerary was we upgraded our last Boat Safari from a group trip to a 3 hour private one so that we could see only the things that we wanted to focus on and it was an incredible excursion. We will definitely be using 2AFRIKA's services again in the future.

IN THEIR OWN WORDS - Back from South Africa and Zambia

As I was sitting on the plane enroute to Johannesburg, I was thinking “I must be crazy traveling to Africa alone. Who does this sort of thing? And I know I will be disappointed because it will be impossible to meet these high expectations made by years of dreaming of this trip.” (And at the age of 58, that’s a lot of years of fantasizing.) Wow! Was I wrong…!!!

The safari in Kruger National Park was nothing short of spectacular. The only animal in the Big 5 that I did not see was the leopard. However, seeing a cheetah within 4 feet of the truck, and seeing a pair of mating lions, more than made up for the lack. While watching the incredible wildlife, I had to constantly remind myself that this was NOT Animal Kingdom in Disney World. This was the real deal. These wild animals are in their own habitat. There were more elephants and giraffes than I could count. Hippos, impala, kudu, wart hogs, cape buffalo, rhino, water bucks, monkeys, crocodiles, myriads of birds of prey and waterfowl….the list is endless. This part of the trip DEFINITELY exceeded my expectations!

I thought the rest of the trip would be dull in comparison. I was wrong. I learned the history of Capetown. I saw the beach ostriches at the Cape of Good Hope. I laughed to see the penguins who had won out over the affluent for their rights to Boulder Beach. I saw the multitudes of seals at Seal Island and I tasted some of the best wine in the world.

Several more surprises awaited me as I sadly departed Capetown for the flight to Zambia. One was the utter magnificence of the “Smoke that Thunders” – Victoria Falls. To not only see these amazing falls, but to feel the spray on your face and to feel the earth shake as the water cascaded so violently into the gorge, made it a true sensory experience. And the trip on the Zambezi river to view a truly beautiful sunset while the hippos lounged around close by was another of those “pinch me I must be dreaming” sequences of which there were so many on this vacation.

I have so many other great memories. The marimba bands playing on their handmade instruments of wood, and in one case, PVC pipes with duct tape, were happy to oblige my video-taking and numerous questions. The beautiful harmony of the mambazo singers entranced me despite being unable to understand the lyrics. Music is an international language!

Even the extraordinary circumstances on the plane as we TRIED to leave Johannesburg, left me with many stories to tell.

I could not have possibly fit one more activity into this trip. The only negative thing I have to say is that it was too short. I wish I had the means to spend at least a month in the beautiful country of South Africa. And now that my appetite has been whetted, I am once again dreaming of a return to the mysterious and wonderful continent of Africa. Next stop - Kenya. And to be sure, I would not even consider arranging my trip without the fantastic services of 2AFRIKA.

IN THEIR OWN WORDS - Back from Kenya and Tanzania

“My dream was to go to Africa and experience all it had to offer, its people, the animals and the scenery. I spent over a year researching how to travel and who should handle my dream trip.

2AFRIKA came to my rescue. I booked my trip to Kenya and Tanzania. As the departure date arrived, I was the only person who had booked that particular date. As a single lady of years, I was wondered what this solo traveler would find. The night before departure, I received a telephone call from Kenneth saying a fellow traveler would join me for part of my adventure. I arrived in Nairobi shortly after noon. There would be three of us on this adventure -- Charles, the driver, Charles, my fellow traveler and I. We called ourselves The Three Charles.

At Serena Mountain Lodge, I wandered to the viewing deck to check out the animals at the watering hole. A little monkey sat quietly on the deck drinking from a cup left behind. The air smelled sweat and I envisioned my trekking along an old animal trail. As I gazed at the flamingos around Lake Nakuru, I was laying on the ground clicking away with my camera, when Charles the driver asked me to return to the van. Little did I know, but behind me was a male lion strolling along the shore oblivious to my presence. He was magnificent and one of many close and up front animal encounters – mother lioness and cubs, a tree leopard, a howling Hyrax, baboons outside my tented accommodations, cheetah cubs and mom resting in the shade. Oh, I can’t forget the elephants in Amboseli walking past our lodge each night toward their watering hole, giraffes, hippos, zebras and wildebeest and the ugliest stork I have ever seen. Monkeys watching me sort through my digital camera disks – only to lose one disk to a dare devil that that took it to the closest tree top. A highlight was feeding giraffes and petting warthogs at the Giraffe Center in Nairobi .

Visiting a Maasai village and talking with the people and children with their Queen’s English and magnificent vocabularies, simply wonderful. A hot air balloon ride in the early dawn— my flight Above Africa. This trip exceeded my greatest expectations. Thanks to everyone at 2AFRIKA.”
