During March and April, a Major African Safari Operator Makes Its Single Supplements and Air Add-ons Disappear - Posted by Arthur Frommer 9/9/2009

A company called 2AFRIKA (http://www.2afrika.com/), run by South African expatriate Kenneth Hieber (who became a naturalized American citizen last month) is one of the most active of safari operators. It is not the cheapest of the safari operators. That accolade belongs to Lion World Tours, which is presently charging from $2,499 to $2,899 for most of its air-included winter and spring safaris (and $2,099 for a handful of March/April departures). 2AFRIKA has announced a basic price of $2,949 per person for most of its weeklong safaris in 2010, including round-trip airfare between New York and Nairobi.

But 2AFRIKA has announced further big news for next year: it is eliminating the single room supplement for all departures in March, April and May, yet supplying such single persons with a room to themselves in the various games park lodges.

Moreover, and perhaps more important, 2AFRIKA is "common-rating" throughout the nation the airfare it provides as part of its safari package. In other words, persons flying to Nairobi from Los Angeles, San Francisco, or Miami will pay the very same total price that is charged to persons flying from New York (air transportation will be on Virgin Atlantic Airways to and from London, connecting there to Kenya Airways to and from Nairobi).

You'll get all the information you need from 2AFRIKA's website or by calling tel. 866/462-2374, and participants will receive all the classic ingredients of a high quality African safari in Kenya, where African wildlife is usually seen in large numbers.

Ken Hieber presented this information when I interviewed him last Sunday on the noontime radio program my daughter and I present. I asked him quite pointedly why the months of March and April are regarded as "low season" in Kenya, thus explaining the single room concession. He explained, as all safari operators do, that in March and April near-daily rainfalls are experienced in the afternoon in countries such as Kenya; that the periods of such rainfall are short and limited; and that they have very little impact on the enjoyment of a safari. I have heard the same explanation on numerous occasions from people, like Ken Hieber, whose trustworthiness I respect.

I'd suggest you carefully compare the dates, duration, features and prices of 2AFRIKA's weeklong safaris to Kenya with the somewhat similar products of Lion World Tours, and then make your decision. Both appear to be fine companies.

A SWINGING SAFARI - IN THEIR OWN WORDS – Just back from Kenya – a report back from a 2AFRIKA valued passenger

MONDAY, MARCH 23RD, 2009
NEW YORK, NY
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Dear Mr. Hieber, I just returned from a once in a lifetime holiday to Kenya with my grandmother. I was completely unprepared for the depth of care shown to us. In my traveling past I've experienced "fair" service provided by kind people

Dom and Thomas crippled me with their dedication, overseeing each detail from smiling airport welcome, handling our baggage, accommodation check in and daily briefs of our next day's plan

Dominik taught me about the people, the wildlife, the flowers and trees of a number of regions of Kenya. This information will be lovingly shared with my children and anyone else who inquires just as he shared it with me. I never felt like a tourist, I felt like an honored guest. I cannot thank you enough for your wonderful arrangements

I will return, if not for any other reason than to visit my new friends in Kenya

A SWINGING SAFARI - IN THEIR OWN WORDS – Just back from Kenya – a report back from a 2AFRIKA valued passenger

SUNDAY, MARCH 22ND, 2009
NEW YORK, NY
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Hello Kenneth:

I wanted to take a few minutes to thank you for arranging our recent trip to Kenya. My granddaughter and I had a fabulous time, and she was fortunate to see the “Big Five” on her first time to East Africa! How lucky is that?!! But, perhaps it wasn’t all luck, as we had the best guide in East Africa, Dominik, the guide you recommended. With the rainy season just starting, there were many lovely, colorful plants and flowers just starting to bloom, truly a feast for the eyes

All the accommodations you arranged for us on our “Swinging Safari” were first-rate, and the service was impeccable. Your agents in Nairobi did everything they could to insure our safety and comfort – I’ve never felt as “pampered” as I have been while in Kenya, not only on this trip but on the three previous ones that you’ve done for me

My granddaughter is already talking about saving for another trip to Kenya, taking her children with her this time, and, of course you know that I will be scheming to find a way back there soon, as well!

Thank you once again for a delightful trip!

Treva S

KENYA CLASSIC - IN THEIR OWN WORDS – Just back from Kenya – a report back from a 2AFRIKA valued passenger

SATURDAY, MARCH 14TH, 2009
NEW YORK, NY
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Dear Kenneth,

Made it back with just one glitch due to a delayed flight from JFK but it all worked out well as I got a good night's rest before continuing on home.

The arrangements you made for the KENYA CLASSIC SAFARI were terrific. When I arrived at the Nairobi Safari Club, I thought there must have been a mistake. I don't normally stay in such fancy surroundings but it was wonderful and the entire staff was terrific. I felt at home with their many kindnesses to me. They were like mother hen's too.

I already told you how great the flight to Nairobi was and the flight back was okay but had a lot more people on it so I was unable to stretch out anywhere. But the airlines were good and I appreciate your getting me there and back in comfort.

The lodges were amazing and your local guide and driver was truly an encyclopedia on Kenya. There was a couple from Germany on the trip and we became friends quickly. It was a great group to be with.

I felt like I was in the Arabian nights when we came back from our first evening game drive in Maasai Mara and the room had been turned down for the night and the mosquito netting was flowing all around the bed. All the lodges were comfortable and the staff so friendly and helpful. They all made me feel as an honored guest.

We saw the big five during our first two drives!! I think I have probably taken at least 2000 photos. Won't bore you with them as you see the real thing and my photo attempts are truly amateur. It was a trip of a lifetime and I certainly hope that I will be able to make another one in this lifetime of mine.

You made it a wonderful trip and for that I do thank you. I did not want to return from "your" and now "my" Africa. I so enjoyed the pace of life and the natural beauty. The warm weather was good too. They all were concerned that it was too hot for me. I like hot. But alas I had to return to work so I can make more money to return. If you ever see a job opening listed for a postal clerk in Kenya let me know and I will return and apply.

Thank you again. You went above and beyond your duty to a client.

God Bless.

DK

IN THEIR OWN WORDS – Just back from Kenya & Tanzania – a report back from 2AFRIKA’s valued passengers

MONDAY, DECEMBER 28TH, 2008
NEW YORK, NY
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Dear Ken:

“R” and I wish to thank you for the arrangements for the ‘East African Explorer’ Safari and to let you know that we enjoyed it immensely. Not only were the people very helpful and courteous and the lodges very comfortable, but the group that we were in (six of us) were very compatible and had a lot of laughs together. We saw all the animals that we wanted to see and have some remarkable photographs, one of which is with Mt. Kilimanjaro in the background.

Remember my request for arrangements to see Lesotho & Swaziland? We can make our own way to Johannesburg and you can pick us up there and take us to Durban and Pietermaritzburg. We’ll be in touch soon.

Thanks ever so much!

“A”
