KENYA
TANZANIA

Dear Kenneth,

Just a quick note to tell you we had a fantastic time on our EAST AFRICAN EXPLORER.

Everything went without a glitch, and all of the lodges were wonderful, as was the service and food at every one. Our guide Moudy on safaris was a kind, quiet and knowledgeable man with a great sense of humor We saw hundreds of animals, including the 'Big Five'.

Our safari mates were a blast! When I found out they were cops, I thought they'd be a bit stodgy, but they were great fun, loved their cocktails (as we all do), and we'll probably keep in touch with them.

Anyway, thanks so much for all of your good work, and when I get a chance, I'm going to post a nice review for 2AFRIKA on Trip Advisor (when I do, I'll send you the link).

Yours sincerely, Scott, Anthony and Katie – Providence RI

PRINCE CHARMIN REPORTING – TOILET HUMOR DOES EXIST!

ONLY IN AFRICA – my harshest critics would slam me for doing this but in this fast paced world of ours I really do think that we need to make time for a bloody good laugh!

Just recently, a departing passenger called in asking whether I would recommend that they take a spare roll of toilet tissue with them on safari in case of an emergency. I was amused but did see the sense in the question and answered appropriately.

A few days ago, we were doing a scan for a particular photograph that we needed to endorse a safari and we stumbled across this photograph. Need I even begin to explain just how funny we found this? Haven’t stopped laughing since . . . what are SLIGHTLY USED TOILET ROLLS? Who would consider purchasing SLIGHTLY USED TOILET ROLLS? How can one even consider selling SLIGHTLY USED TOILET ROLLS and which ‘quality control inspector’ determines whether the toilet rolls are SLIGHTLY USED or not?

I guess to fully appreciate the humor in this photograph one has to have visited Africa! What an astonishingly magnificent continent – and indeed a place where we do laugh at the sheer stupidity each one of us comes up with more often than not.

In an economic turmoil, I have to admit though that this is indeed great value for money – at the prevailing rate of exchange, you can buy 10 SLIGHTLY USED (I still cannot get over that) toilet rolls in South Africa for $1.22! With the rate of exchange in your favor, isn’t it time that you took a well-deserved safari vacation to Africa?

BACK FROM ZIMBABWE & BOTSWANA

Dear Kenneth:

Michael and I are now back home in Canada arriving at 7 pm last night.

I want to take the opportunity to thank you for your work at putting our trip to Zimbabwe and Botswana together.

We had a seamless itinerary with incredibly efficient transfers.

Ilala lodge at Victoria Falls was very beautiful and we would highly recommend it to other travelers. We enjoyed a sundowner cruise on the Zambezi River (free drinks and appetizers) and a walk around Victoria falls with a guide (excellent). We added a full day rafting on the Zambezi which was awesome.... again highly recommended.

Our transfer to Botswana was very easy and we LOVED Elephant Valley Camp. Wow!! The food and accommodations were amazing and we had a tent facing the watering hole just in front of the camp. Their pool was also very nice. We did two game drives (in Chobe) and a Boat Cruise on the Chobe river.

The transfer to Pom-Pom Camp was a lot of fun - via Moremi Air - our pilot transferred us in our "private" plane and we even landed twice before making it to Pom-Pom. He even did a low fly by over the Chobe River where there was a HUGE herd of elephants....

Pom-Pom was an absolute surprise.......we were greeted at the camp by 5 women singing a "welcome" song in their own language....all in harmony.....we had a light lunch, a lie by the pool (is was 38 degrees) and then tea, followed by an evening game drive, complete with a sundowner in the park......we saw many lions and birds on this drive.......on our second day there, we had a Mekoro ride and learned a lot about the delta by a very experienced guide.....we had a nice break afterwards and then another awesome evening drive.... Our transfer back to Kasane was smooth (even though our aircraft lost electrical power and the pilot had to hand "pump" down the landing gear) this was Delta Air..... it seemed that Moremi Air had more well maintained and larger aircraft fleet FYI.

We had a bit of a rush through Zimbabwe border - our rep took our passports and visa fees and went to the front of a long line for us to expedite this transfer. We made it with plenty of time to the Victoria Falls airport and had an uneventful trip home.

We intend on contacting you for future travel to Africa.

Thanks again,

Brian & Michael

PURE AND SIMPLE BEAUTY – is how one ‘In Their Own Words’ entrant described her African Experience

MONDAY, OCTOBER 19, 2009
NEW YORK, NY
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

PURE AND SIMPLE BEAUTY

That’s how I would describe my memories of Africa from my safari with 2AFRIKA! I went into this trip with no clue of what to expect. I was excited yet somewhat apprehensive of the vast country I was about to encounter. Yet from the first email with my 2AFRIKA rep to the clerk at the smallest vineyard in Stellenbosch, I received only the best, from knowledge and experience to recommendations and places to avoid. What a FABULOUS trip this was!

Johannesburg and the tour of Soweto put names and places with knowledge from history and social studies. It was awe inspiring to see the people and learn about their lives. It was pure and simple, there was nothing fancy about any of it.

Kruger National Park is the epitome of pure and simple beauty! Nothing could be more simple than seeing rhinos and lions roaming together in their natural habitat. The experience of the Manyatta Rock Camp was amazing. I can’t think of another place where your room is a rock and your shower is attached to the outside of the rock so you can stare at the stars while you feel the warmth of the water under a night sky.

Sunset on the Zambezi River in Zambia was pure and simple beauty! From the chair on the boat I watched as the sun set in the distance. Everyone on the boat was quiet, in awe of the natural beauty of this phenomena we experience everyday yet seldom take advantage of! It’s funny how being in a different environment makes you appreciate the natural beauty of the earth even more!

Africa was an unforgettable experience! The people and the land are pure and simple beauty!

URGENT NEWS - VISAS – VICTORIA FALLS / ZIMBABWE

MONDAY, OCTOBER 19, 2009
NEW YORK, NY
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

IMMEDIATE AND IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT REGARDING VISAS FOR ZIMBABWE

PLEASE NOTE – Historically, any passenger visiting Zimbabwe who may have left the country (E.G. a day-visit to nearby Chobe National Park or a day-visit to the Zambia side of the Victoria Falls) but intended retuning to Zimbabwe to overnight was not requested to reapply for an additional visa upon return.

However, with immediate effect, Zimbabwe will be charging for re-entry visas for passengers who have left the country on a day trip. This information received today (Monday October 18, 2009) seems to have been in place for a few days already – it is not unusual for us to receive such information after implementation. We do however draw such issues to our passengers’ attention immediately upon receipt thereof.

Our on-site representatives have informed us that any passengers leaving Zimbabwe on a day trip MUST purchase a multiple entry visa for Zimbabwe.

The same rule applies in the opposite direction and has a bearing on our Botswana Safaris. If you arrive into the Victoria Falls International Airport, you will need to purchase a visa to enter Zimbabwe merely to take an overland transfer to Botswana.

PULA, our popular Botswana Safari includes a day trip to the Victoria Falls – Zimbabwe . . . which means that you have to purchase a multiple entry for Zimbabwe. Additionally, if your departure back to the United States commences from the Victoria Falls International Airport, you will require yet another visa to enter the country, simply to depart.

The cost of the visa differs by nationality and is subject to change without notice. It appears at this time via our sources that a single entry visa will cost $60.00 whilst a multiple entry visa will cost $95.00 but frankly, that will depend on the mood of the Immigration Official on duty at the time of your application.

PATHETIC ISN’T IT?

Just another reason to avoid Zimbabwe . . . what a shame . . . for it is a beautiful country . . . but 2AFRIKA, INC. cannot constantly be in the middle of visa costs . . . particularly since we do not make the rules nor charge the visa costs on behalf of the Zimbabwean Government!

AFRICAN SAFARI CONCERNS BECOME PRESCIOUS MEMORIES

SATURDAY, OCTOBER 17, 2009
NEW YORK, NY
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Here is a list of the things that worried me most before I took my first African safari:

A)Coming down with malaria, sleeping sickness, typhoid fever, and pretty much every other disease for which I had, and had not, been inoculated

B)Finding that our lodges in no way resembled the 'touched-up' photos on the websites. I feared everything from shabby rooms and broken-down generators, to holey mosquito netting around our beds

C)Having to eat bad, strange food while my supply of Imodium dwindled

D)Being attacked by rampaging elephants, hungry lions, enraged rhinos – you name it – while stranded in our disabled vehicle, under the broiling African sun

E)Getting stuck with miserable boring people while stranded in above vehicle

Was I being a bit neurotic?

My companion thought so.

Tom seemed mostly concerned about missing out on one or more of 'the big five'.

Maybe that’s just how a guy thinks.

Here is what we DID experience on our trip to Kenya and Tanzania:

On our first day we had a relaxing afternoon and fine poolside dinner under the setting Nairobi sun. Wow – we’re really here!! It was surprisingly cool and pleasant.

After a good night’s sleep we met our traveling companions, and split up into three safari vehicles bound for the Maasai Mara. Our fellow travelers hailed from the U.S., the U.K., Canada, New Zealand, and Belgium. What a terrific group!

Our guides in Kenya and Tanzania were wonderful. Geevon and Amari were not just punctual, courteous and friendly. They were great drivers, and amazingly well-informed about the local flora and fauna.

They were also mysterious. On our game drives, they were in constant radio contact with other guides. Eavesdropping was fruitless, although one of our friends did speak a smidgen of Swahili.

We all knew something was up when our driver would take a quick detour, and we’d go flying and bouncing over the sandy, rutted tracks. We were rewarded by a group of young male lions enjoying a juicy cape buffalo, leopards in trees with their kills, baby cheetahs chirping for their missing mom, white AND black rhino sightings and the ever-popular mating lions. We saw 'the big five' many times over – and so much more. Tom was a happy man.

After an early morning game drive, or at the end of the day, it was delightful to return to our lodge. Even by American standards, they were never disappointing – and sometimes downright luxurious. We enjoyed lovely spacious rooms, sparkling swimming pools, and stunning natural scenery. How impressive to be sipping a cocktail while viewing a panorama of Mt Kilimanjaro, the Ngorongoro crater or the Serengeti plains. The food was varied, plentiful and delicious, the hotel staff always gracious and smiling.

The nights and early mornings were often punctuated by the sounds, and occasional sights, of animals moving about. While at the Hemingway Bar viewing area at Amboseli Lodge, we were treated to the sight of the very rare Kenyan pussycat mingling with the mongooses. We always felt safe though – even neurotic me.

And yes, some of the roads are horrible, and sometimes vehicles have flat tires or mechanical issues (ours did once – and we all got out and pushed while Amari popped the clutch), but it’s all part of the adventure………and a great adventure it was.

PS. I still have a full packet of Imodium in my medicine cabinet!

OLDEST SKELETON SHINES NEW LIGHT ON HUMAN ORIGINS

FRIDAY, OCTOBER 16, 2009
NEW YORK, NY
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

As reported in AFRICA - the good news Friday October 02, 2009

Anthropologists took the wraps off the oldest known human ancestor Thursday - a 4.4-million-year-old Ethiopian skeleton named Ardi, which challenges many long-held assumptions about how humans and apes evolved.

"It's not a chimp. It is not a human. It shows us what we used to be," said paleoanthropologist Tim White of the University of California-Berkeley, co-director of the research group that discovered and analyzed more than 110 specimens of the 4.4-million- year-old species Ardipithecus ramidus.

White was speaking at a Washington press conference a day before a series of 47 articles on the find are published in the American journal Science.

Ardi is the most complete skeleton among the specimens and is more than a million years older than the famous Lucy skeleton uncovered in the 1970s. She was found in 1992 in Ethiopia's harsh Afar desert at a site called Aramis, just 74 kilometres from where Lucy's species, Australopithecus afarensis, was found in 1974.

An initial paper was published in 1994, but the fossils were so fragile it took a further 15 years to reconstruct Ardi's skeleton and analyse it.

The findings provide scientists with information on what a common ancestor for humans and apes may have been like, with a mix of traits from earlier species and later species.

But Ardi and her species were less like modern apes than scientists expected - indicating that apes likely evolved extensively after scientists say the apes and humans diverged. This challenges the long-standing scientific belief that apes give a good look at what an early ancestor of humans may have looked like.

Small-brained, 120 centimetres tall and weighing about 50 kilograms, Ardipithecus ramidus lived in a wooded environment, climbing on all fours in the trees and walking on two feet on the ground, not walking on their knuckles like gorillas or swinging from the trees like chimps.

"So when you go from head to toe, you're seeing a mosaic creature that is neither chimpanzee, nor is it human. It is Ardipithecus," White said.

"Darwin said we have to be really careful. The only way we're really going to know what this last common ancestor looked like is to go and find it.

Well, at 4.4 million years ago we found something pretty close to it. And, just like Darwin appreciated, evolution of the ape lineages and the human lineage has been going on independently since the time those lines split, since that last common ancestor we shared," White said.

IN THEIR OWN WORDS - Back from Kenya, Tanzania & Zanzibar

WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 14, 2009
NEW YORK, NY
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

KENYA
TANZANIA
ZANZIBAR

Kenya and Tanzania are amazing!

The varied ecosystems, abundance of animals, fresh air, delicious food, warm sunny days, and cultural differences all contributed to a wonderful vacation. Having skilled drivers to see to everything meant my only concerns were to change batteries, film, and memory cards in my cameras and enjoy the experience.

The seven parks and reserves I visited were all different and remarkable in their own way. My favorite was Kenya’s Amboseli National Park because it was always changing. It was very dry upon my arrival and seemed like a ghost town. Everything was covered in volcanic ash from Mt. Kilimanjaro with dust funnels whirling into the sky. But after it rained the park was green and fresh, and it looked like a completely different place. The sky was incredible and constantly changing. It could be clear and blue and just down the road, it would be multicolored and ominous.

Beside the variety of wild life, seeing the “Big Five” and witnessing the migration, there are many things I will never forget about East Africa. One is being awaken in the morning by a staff member calling out “Jambo!” when bringing a breakfast tray to the tent before the sunrise game drive. The melodious sound of the Maasai welcome chant, when I visited a village to learn of their culture, was hauntingly beautiful. Witnessing a brawl between two troops of baboons in the Serengeti was an unexpected treat. A hot air balloon ride over the Maasai Mara Game Reserve fulfilled a long time dream of mine. I enjoyed hand feeding cabbage to tortoises and seeing baby peacocks on Prison Island. And wish I could experience the succulent sweet juiciness of fresh picked fruit and the exotic aromas of spices in Zanzibar again. Seeing the majestic peak of Mt. Kilimanjaro, in all its snow covered glory, from above the clouds was breathtaking. And now every time it rains while the sun is shining here, at home, I smile knowing it’s because the hyenas are having a wedding.

The most striking thing about my trip though was the people. I will never forget the way the Kenyans’ eyes sparkle when they smile. In fact, their entire faces light up the moment they smile which causes a chain reaction and before you know it everyone is smiling.

Thank you Kenneth, 2AFRIKA really did make my safari dreams come true!

Our Journey to South Africa with 2AFRIKA

While looking through Budget Travel, I came across a grand trip for a grand price to Africa. We had always wanted to go, and decided this was the time to make our dreams come true. We booked the trip for late August and immediately began planning!

The day we boarded the plane, I think we were in disbelief. Twenty three hours later we arrived in Zimbabwe, tired but excited, watching the landscape go by, en route to our gorgeous lodge. Our first full day in Zimbabwe was a tour of Victoria Falls. The power of the water, creating its own rainbow, while surrounded by lush foliage was a sight many will never have the chance to experience. Later that day, we took an elephant safari. Cocoa and Stephen made a great team; hostess and guide! The next day we were guided through the 18-hole golf course by one of the helpful staff, and to our amazement walked through herds of Kudu and Water Buck, Warthogs, and Baboons, some of which hung from a volleyball net! It was an incredible sight and a great story for the golf enthusiasts back home!

As our trip progressed to Botswana, our first sighting of Giraffe on the side of the road was worth wide eyed looks, and kept us speechless, except for an occasional “look!” While staying at the magnificent lodge there, one of the most memorable aspects was a boat ride on the Chobe River. As we slid down the river, we passed lounging hippos, and crocodiles, various species of birds, and even monitor lizards. The masses of elephants drinking, crossing, and playing in the water, was more than photographs could capture, and as if to put an exclamation point on the day, the breathtaking sunset settled over the countryside, as we became part of the postcard.

Lastly we visited a Namibian village, learning the culture, and struggles of past and present from someone who lives there. The natives were remarkable, and it was a great way to end our days in Africa.

This life changing first trip to Africa included four countries, one of the Seven Wonders of the World, animals from elephants to spiders, and inhabitants of villages to huge cities, such as Johannesburg. It educated us, and brought awareness of a diverse existence. Thank you for the opportunity!
